Four Speakers

The Beast has speakers in the rear doors.

There are no tweeters in the corners of the dash.

I cannot see if there's a center speaker in the dash.

Conversations on the Caprice PPV forums and Facebook make me think that what's going on with my car is the norm.

The radio only has two channels but the car's wiring is set up for four.

There is debate about if unlocking the radio will restore function to the extra speakers.

If the wiring is still connected in my car, then all four should work when I plug in the new "silver box."

I've found out that one of the four antenna plugs on the new box is an XM/Sirius port and should only need an antenna plugged in to make it work.  Eyes crossed, because I ordered a shark-fin and cables.

I need to decide on a back-up camera.  It must be simple because everyone is talking about the clever ways they mounted it and nobody is talking about wiring it.

  1. You may already know this. Researching WX7 code is a wiring provision code. For whatever reason the police package deletes the front speakers. Odd that yours play. What is the location of X230?/X267. You have eye balled X267 and it has all the required Colored leads? And X230 does not have enough terminal space for speaker leads? Does X1 have the correct terminal count and wire colors? Wonder what software is in this radio and if its programmed with correct options? Your new radio will need programming unless its preset up to learn the VIN.Typically the options have to be selected too.

    1. I have not cracked the dash apart yet to look for X267, but it's supposed to be an 8-pin connector right behind the glove box under the dash.

From what I've read on forums X1 comes out the radio and goes to X267 and this is where the upfitter can disconnect the speakers from the radio and insert their own harness.

X230 is a 16-pin connector and since the 11 things that are supposed to run through it are running, I suspect that X230 isn't the connector the WX7 wiring is using.

The new radio is supposed to have my VIN already programmed into it. Eyes crossed!

I might have to pay for an SPS subscription to see if there's options not enabled. I suspect that the XM in plug is such an option because there ain't no XM in Oz.

  3. Since you have the manual, when you go to the illustration for x230 does it point out a connector for option wx7? Usually to reduce harness part numbers the additional option connectors were in place.I'd ask you if you feel lucky but I know that's not the case.(except your still here, thankfully)

    1. I'll take a picture of the connector diagrams tomorrow.

X267 IS the WX7 connector option. No alternate pinout is listed for X230.

The forums say that what I have is common and adding a radio with four speaker outputs fixes the problem if both sides of X267 are connected to each other. Worst case is I have a harness that's bridging both sides that needs to be removed to reconnect the halves.

  4. There are now apparently decent wireless rear view cameras that affix to the license plate frame and you run one wire to a reverse light and the other to ground to power it. I have never tested one of these and ran hard wires through the hatch wiring conduit on my VW which was a stone cold bitch to do, not to mention getting it to the front and into the dash. Several days of dismantling interiors and running fish tape to try and drag it under the door sill carpeting and so on. I used a camera that replaced one of the license plate illumination lamps, then had to play with making silicone wedges to tweak the point of aim so it was sort of centered to the car track seeing that the camera was not adjustable in aim. In all it was a real pain in the ass. If you can find a reverse camera from a similar GM car in the junkyard, go with that as a solution, or look into the wireless types. Good luck.
