All The Coolest Tech

None of the funding...

The Advanced Combat Rifle competition:

I remember reading about this when it was going on.

As a Twilight: 2000 GM and player, I was rooting for the G11!

  1. Gauss rifles. I'm waiting for gauss rifles (and pistols) (and SMGs) (and...)

Come on, science dudes, give us gauss rifles before the ChiComms!

  2. Those Gauss rifles of your dreams had better have some effective shielding.

Modern battle-field electronics, and paramagnetic metal equipment will likely react badly to intense magnetic fields.

  3. It's an old argument amongst Traveller players. Why the ACR when you can get a Gauss Rifle? The answer is you can source ACR ammo from a Tech Level 4-5 culture (WWI to WWII). Better for the Mercenary or the random traveller to get their ammo needs filled pretty much throughout the universe.

The lower tech level stuff may be garbagy, requiring more cleaning, but at least you won't run out of energy or screw up unshielded electronics.

Gauss Rifles being TL12, Advanced Combat Rifles being TL10. In Traveller, that is.

    1. I can source Gauss ammo as far back as Traveller TL 1. 4mm iron spikes work as long as I have power for the gun. Definitely reduced performance without the very advanced bullet construction.

I'd argue that you can't source ACR ammo with WW2 tech because they don't have the chemical technology to make propellant with the proper energy density. Even if they could, the caseless rounds are beyond them. Nearly all the money in the G11 was figuring out a cartridge which was durable and clean burning and wouldn't cook off in a moderately hot chamber AND didn't leave behind embers to light the next round.

An epiphany I had about tech in Traveller is a lot of things are going to be available on low TL worlds they cannot possibly manufacture. Just look at Afghanistan. Modern weapons and electronics abound. A means to charge those electronics is present. They couldn't hope to make a Motorola radio to save their lives, but they don't need to.

These things might be luxury SUV priced on such worlds and vending machine cheap where they're made, but that doesn't make the unobtainable. Such arbitrage is the entire basis of a Free Trader campaign.

    2. And, again, I am so glad I can comment. Someone I can talk geek with! Do you hang at "Citizens of the Imperium" any?
