Disconnect

I've been friends with several Vietnam veterans.

To a man they've said that they didn't hold anything against the Black soldiers they served with.

Combat does have an equalizing agency that many other endeavors lack.

One even stated that his racist shit he'd gotten from his dad evaporated when he was under fire and everyone was doing their job regardless of the racial or social starting points.

But it's a matter of historical fact that racism was part of the Vietnam experience for Black troops.

It makes me wonder if the problem was REMF motherfuckers rather than the people actually going to the field.

Funny New Guys has me looking at it and it seems like Black troops caught more and harder punishments than White troops and that the people being anal about making sure punishment was meted out weren't the same people walking the bush.

I'm reading and learning.

  1. Among veterans there is a bond that is greater than race or any other differences for we all sacrificed for a common good. We were taught to work and suffer together because we are men and men work together... 'there is no greater love...'

  2. this won't get published because I'm not signed into google, and I'm fine with that. Just wanted to say my nad was a Vietnam vet. He grew up in a small town and his father taught him to be racist. his 2 tours in 'nam as a combat grunt changed that. He had nothing but respect for the Vietnams people and saw them as hardworking folk who just wanted to be left alone (he also said they were damn good fighters). . He had nothing but positive thing s to say about his buddies (black or white). So yeah, this tracks.

    1. I've decided that I can make the occasional exception for anon comments that well support my point in a post.

It's my blog and getting to decide if I can make exceptions to my rules is one of the perks.
