Unfamiliar Term

The exhaust trunks on a ship are called "uptakes".

It makes sense, they take the exhaust up and out of the ship.

The intake is still called intake...

The smoke stacks can be called funnels.

The stuff one learns looking for something else to fill in a Traveller idea.

  1. And a lot of funnels, or stacks, have uptake fans in them to draw the hot air out of the engine room / machinery spaces and vent it. The nomenclature in Naval Architecture is fascinating, a language all it's own. I'm a practicing NavArch, 20 years, and there's still things that you'll that will puzzle you.

    1. I was almost a naval drafter. I was even hired by Electric Boat to do as-builds on the 4th Seawolf... Sounded like an exciting job because the as-built team goes out on builder's trials.

And was let go before my first day of work when funding for it was cancelled.

I had not even packed up my stuff to move yet.

But it was still a fascinating world I dipped a toe into.
