Almost Forgot!

Happy birthday to the US Cavalry!

Being dragoons and calling themselves cavalry since 1776.

Actually, I did forget, but I can back-date the post to hours before I posted it!

It's my blog and I do what I want!

  1. 'Civilize them with a Krag' ! Cool old rifle with cool saber. Actually, the whole picture and contents are well composed - thanks for the picture of them.

  2. :-) And here I thought I was the only one calling them Dragoons... But I was just an Engineer (12B) myself so never really had a stake in the discussion... In any case Happy Birthday!

    1. I started calling them dragoons when they got all snooty about the spur ride thing.

My company had gone out and bought Stetsons and braids just for a lark. Being tankers, the cav unit across the way objected strenuously.

Dear sirs, we explained, we actually fight from our mounts, whereas you dismount. Thus we are actually cavalry and you are dragoons. Are you even entitled to wear the proud yellow braids or should you be wearing blue?

Even more amusing is this set off a little internal feud in the cav unit.

The crews that remained mounted in the M3's decided that they weren't dragoons either, but since they had longer reach with their TOW than our main guns, they should be called lancers.

This did not sit well with command OR the dismounts.
