I nuked my FaceBook account 16 hours ago and so far the only people who've noticed are commenters here where I specifically mentioned it and Harvey.
She noticed right away.
But there's a raft of meatspace people who don't appear to have noticed.
Their silence makes me wonder if they're sitting there thinking, "Oh thank the gods he's finally shut up!"
That makes me think that we haven't actually been friends.
I've had a growing feeling that anyone who won't keep in touch without Facebook is someone who's moved on from the friendship anyway.
I'm sad because I'd thought I was still friends with a lot of people, but it appears that we were just friends in my fevered imagination.
Plus, AGAIN, I walk away and nobody even tries to see where I've gone.
FUUUUUUCK!
It's really depressing to see that it must be you.
I'm not worth chasing down when I walk away.
I guess if I was likeable or lovable I wouldn't have a blog, huh?

I haven't logged into FB in a few days. And for a long time this blog has been a safer and sometimes more reliable way to interact with you. I pretty much can't risk posting anything on FB that is the slightest bit political, religious or even possibly controversial because someone, somewhere might be offended by it someday. The intolerance of people on the left for free speech and free thought has ruined that platform. Worse than that I think the platform's algorithms purposely hide anyone or anything they think might not follow their political agenda. So it is possible some people may not notice you aren't there right away because they weren't reliably seeing your posts anyway. And given the deluge there of hateful left wing speech, even if one was occasionally slipping through they could probably easily miss it in the chaos there.
ReplyDeleteI hate missing some people over there, but the general mess that FB has become makes me weary very quickly and I have to disconnect again.
These are people I was interacting with. Liking their posts, them liking mine in response.
DeleteMorning through lunchtime is usually pretty active.
I just know that I'm going to drop dead and it will be weeks before anyone even thinks to come check on me. Heck I will prolly have a stroke or something and end up dying from dehydration on the floor because nobody checks up on me.
I had a similar experience when I nuked my fb account years ago. I posted a message indicating that I would be deleting my account in 48 hours and anyone that want my contact info should message me beforehand. I didn't get a single message.

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anything lately on farcebook from you, but since I see you here on a regular basis, I wasn't concerned. Now if you vanish here, then I might get concerned if there is another digital night of long knives where a conservative bloggers just "vanish" as I have seen several of them do.
Some people just use Book of Face exclusively now. And if a person disappears, that person is mad at someone or everyone so skeedadled because of reasons.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't take it too personal, unless you and they were friends before FB existed. Then that does make a person wonder. Blogging and Face Booking simultaneously must take a lot of personal time.

Most of them are friends from before the internet. Used Facebook to reconnect, but so many of them don't connect except with Facebook.

There's prolly a whole post's worth of content in the reasons why I nuked my Facebook account. My Angus McThag account is still active.
I only know you via the Angus McThag FB page, and I don't see all that many posts from it crossing my timeline, frankly.

We found some feelers of people trying to make a connection with The Lovely Harvey because of things I'd said on my real-name FB.
Nuking the account tends to nuke those tendrils.
