There was someone test firing their "new" .500 Nitro Express double at the range yesterday while I was zeroing Dottie and Linda.
The owner said that they were shooting reduced loads and getting information so they could send it back to the gunsmith to have the sights adjusted to point of aim.
It was hitting high and right at 30 yards, but both barrels were hitting about the same place.
It's a Nitro Express, why would you modify the sights for reduced loads.
ReplyDeleteIf wanted a softer shooting rifle get something else.
The reduced loads are calculated to hit the correct point of impact to properly adjust the sights to zero the rifle. I read about this when researching big-game stuff for GURPS.
DeleteTraditionally, you booked a fare to London and spent a week at H&H getting the gun fitted, regulated and zeroed to your satisfaction.
Today you can still do that, but...
So what you end up doing is test firing a lot and recording the results and sending the data back to the smith who then makes the adjustments to the non-adjustable sights.
Bringing old guns back is a process sometimes.
