Oil Soaked Rag Fire

The Lovely Harvey is refinishing a dresser.  She spilled the linseed oil and used this towel to clean up the spill.

A couple hours later we're going to the garage to see how the dresser is drying and we smell the smouldering.

The video is from that!

I've read about this phenomenon repeatedly, but had never actually seen it in person.

  1. My neighbor had an old bag of charcoal catch fire. Fire inspector said that the bag was sitting on cement & sucked up moisture that started rotting the coal that is in charcoal & generated enough heat to ignite. Kingsford Original, always thought that stuff smelled nasty that's why I use natural lump.

    1. Kind of similar to this, I've seen round hay bales spontaneously catch fire. Happens when the hay isn't allowed to dry out enough before its baled and starts to rot from the inside.

  2. I always thought it was just a myth until I saw someone on yousetubs do a video on it. Absolutely crazy. There's a reason for 'shop rag' bins with lids in a woodworking shop.
