Someone Might Have Gotten Hurt

Australia, famously, put heavy restrictions on who could own and carry a gun and what types of guns could be carried and owned.

Good thing, otherwise someone might have been killed in a massacre in a mall.

Oh... wait...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's the crazy (or evil) more than the guns what causes shit like this, especially since it was crazy (or evil) with a knife.

It's a pretty beefy limb to say that, if this had happened in Tampa, the stabber would have been ventilated much faster and long before a cop arrived.  With many fewer injuries and deaths.

  1. I have long been in the habit of pointing out, when the subject of "school shooting" comes up, that the biggest school massacre in US, if not world, history was done with explosives---not firearms. The Bath School Massacre took out nearly 80 people, most of them little kids, in 1927.

  2. And to riff off one of your (Angus's) saying, so far none of my knives, swords, machetes, axes, spears, tomahawks, hammers, screwdrivers, chains, maces or flails have yet to self-animate and attempt to kill someone.

Now, have I been hurt because I wasn't paying attention and one dropped while I was cleaning? I plead the 5th. But still the object du hurte wouldn't have done hurted me (crap, I just told on myself) without me taking some physical action (since my Jedi powers/psionics are still latent, darned it) and causing said object to move and cause pain.

  3. Hey Angus,

I'm of the belief that if it was a straight white dude, his identity would have already have been leaked to the media vultures circulating. perhaps I am in error but I doubt it. And you are correct, if this had happened in the South, said perp would have been ventilated.

  4. I am torn (but not really).

If that event had happened while my family and I were in the vicinity, I could have stopped him with little risk to myself, but the legal shit-storm that would have descended on me as a consequence is truly terrifying to think about.

If my family were under threat, then the decision has already been made, but defending others with force that would likely be declared "illegal"? I'm not so sure.

Maybe that makes me a bad person, but the probability of destroying my life and financially crippling my family for a stranger would make it a hard call.

As an aside: I wish all those calling it a tragedy, would please stop. It was an ATROCITY not a TRAGEDY.

I'm glad the royals and pope are against mass murder, otherwise I would not no how to feel about it
