Ackshually

I hate to be the one to say it, but...

The AR-15 has been used by the US military in war.

The Colt AR-15 model R601 was used by advisors in Vietnam during Project Agile.

AR-15 didn't always mean a semi-auto clone of the M16 (or M4 for that matter).

If your Colt AR-15 model number has 3-digits after the letter(s) then it was select fire, 4-digits were semi-auto.

  1. I am certainly no expert, since I never have owned an AR 15, although both of my sons have, and I have shot one of them. But didn't the AR 15 used by the military go by the moniker of CAR 15?
Again, not an expert, but I have seen that name used, mostly during the first phase of trials in Vietnam, by advisors. And that iteration was loved by the soldiers who used it. I think that it must have been used with ammunition with the correct powder and such, that was changed by the bean counters in Washington, that caused so much trouble when they were issued, causing jamming problems. Of course, they eventually got that sorted out, and now the M4 carbine is one of the more respected guns in the world. So naturally the U.S. has to change it. lol. They are going with a Sig rifle, and a heavier bullet, I think a 6.8 mm round, I have heard similar to the .243?
Anyway, good post, and you are correct, lying by people who should know better to support the 2nd amendment is not helpful.

    1. Colt used the CAR-15 for carbine versions and for ALL versions depending on when you're talking. It's why the retro-heads just use the R-number describing the submodels.

  2. Meh,who cares? The second amendment is a statement affiming the Right of the People to Keep and Bear arms,. Not just for hunting, hunting was as common as breathing, taken for granted. Self defense? How could any sane people not understand the natural instinct to defend themselves? So that brings leaves what? What the Second Amendment is about,, the times in the history books when governments become tyrannical. The Second Amendment limits the government from taking weapons of War from the people. Because If it is time for casting off a tyrannical Government, if you don't think that is a war, what do you call it? The War for Independence was Exactly the People casting off the Tyranny of the government which at the time had the Biggest baddest military in the world, . Stop cringing about how they say We don't Need weapons of Waarr on our streets. Bulshit, you can find yourself in a situation where the bad guys have Weapons of Waar,,

    1. It matters because this sort of thing is used as a gotcha on us over and over. It's not US that falls for the gotcha, but the people who don't shoot and are generally apolitical.

  3. Ackchyually,

"AR-15 didn't always mean a semi-auto clone of the M16 (or M4 for that matter)"
The M16 is a full auto clone of the AR15. The AR15 was invented for, and sold on, the civilian market and then modified for the Army.
The R601 was a prototype that was built from receivers that had been manufactured and marked for civilian sale and then modified. Once the type was adopted rifles were built on newly produced modified receivers marked M16.

    1. The AR-15 was always intended as a military rifle by Armalite.

Colt made the decision to make civilian versions in both selective and semi-auto.

R601 is a production model, not a prototype. When the Air Force got interested it leads to small changes and the R602. Although never designated so, the R602 can be considered an XM16. The Army gets involved in here and the XM16E1 and M16A1 are Colt model R603.

The type classifications get goofy. R602 probably should have been the M16 but the USAF didn't get it type classified before the Army started their adoption, so the R604 becomes the M16 after the classification of the M16A1.

    1. CAR has meant Colt AR and Carbine AR at various times. The gun most people think of as a CAR-15 is the XM177 series. I certainly did when I started assembling AR's from parts kits.
