Eric Flint has passed to the great beyond.
I enjoyed the 1632 series, can't put my finger on anything else he's written that I've read.

"Mother of Demons," his first book, was also very good. He wrote in the "Heirs of Alexandria" series about Venice and magic and stuff, rather good and captures the feel of the 1400-1500s very well.
ReplyDeleteHe LARPed the "Marxist-Leninist, but niiiiiiiiiiiice!" crap. Good riddence. Bury his treasonous ass in the Katyn Wood.
ReplyDeleteHe'd be pleased, then, to know that I never paid a penny for any of his work.
DeleteThe Philosophical Strangler was a pretty good light fantasy book. Kinda in a similar vein to Pratchett. I think that one's free to download on Kindle.
ReplyDeleteThere's a good obituary on Mad Genius Club by one of his co-authors, comments are good also.

I wasn't that keen on 'Mother of Demons' and never got into 163* beyond the first, but lots of his co-written stuff is excellent (Belisarius, with David Drake - starts with 'An Oblique Approach'; his collabs with Dave Freer; the Jao Empire series with K D Wentworth/David Carrico - starts with 'The Course of Empire'). Now, of course, how much of these collaborations was him writing, and how much was the co-author is hard to tell, but they are well worth a look, and pretty diverse in genre/style, so disliking one may not discout another.
