Time To Cull The Herd

With the acquisition of the M1911A1, I no longer need the Springfield-Armory M-1911 A1 USGI.

The Springfield was purchased to fill the same nostalgia itch that the real-deal scratches much better.

The problem is that I am teh suxxor at selling things and getting their value out of them.

I'm excellent at selling low to just get them out of the clutter pile.

I'd go to GunBroker, but I know that UPS wants near $100 for their mandatory next-day shipping and that puts a $100 hit on the customer's perception of the value of the gun.

Do they want it bad enough to pay the fair price plus shipping, or do I have to discount it the price of shipping to get them to buy?

Unless I do a consignment, a gun or pawn shop isn't going to get me what it's worth either.  Even then, I will lose a percentage in the consigning.

  1. I'd buy it, but funding is too damn low.

    For shipping, try ShipMyGun.com

  2. I feel your pain. Without collector incentive most used firearms depreciate which skews the concept of fair value. That said, what is your ask on this item?

    1. I'd be thrilled to get $500 out of it. The USGI was basically the same gun as a parkerized Mil-Spec with the original, tiny 1911 sights. Springfield MSRP's the Mil-Spec at $780...

  3. and to top it off, palmetto has them on sale for 500 with free shipping. timing is everything.

    1. But you know McThag's has been lovingly cleaned and tuned, so add on the $100+ you'd spend on getting one of Palmetto's tuned and McThag's looks like a good deal.

If I win the Lotto this weekend I'll drive down and pick it up. Just don't hang your life on me winning...

    2. The $500 one from PSA isn't the same model. It's blue for one thing.

The Defender is, I think, for a different market than my gun. The Defender is for someone who wants a workmanlike 1911 that doesn't break the bank.

The discontinued and uncommon USGI is for the nostalgic who want as close as they can get to a real issue M1911A1 without, likewise, breaking the bank.

I'd heartily recommend the Defender over my gun if you're looking for *A* .45 1911 and not a military issue clone.

    5. figured there was a catch with the palmetto version. heck even rock island guns are getting 500 these days as are beat up shot out ballester molinas. surely your gun would do better than either on gunbroker or such. my boss is a gunsmith/ffl and i'm sure he's not paying 100 bucks shipping either. he does complain about usps being inconsistent from one day to the next though. good luck to you.

  4. What about a gun show private sale?

    1. I'm pretty sure that since a large gun retailer bought out the major show that such sales have been prohibited by the rules of the show.

  5. I feel your pain. With my current financial crisis, I'd love to sell my Chinese-made Broomhandle Mauser, but I don't think Jacobson would give me what it's worth.

  6. I might be interested if I (like apparently everyone else) wasn't broke, and I didn't already have one.
