Though, technically, it wasn't the United States yet...
I'm often amused that the Army, Navy and Marines predate the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and The Constitution.

And the Continental Congress authorized 2 Engineering officers to aid Gen. Washington THE DAY BEFORE they authorized the Army. Thus The Corps of Engineers is THE senior branch. Why yes, my father DID serve 31 years in the Engineers. Why do you ask? BTW, my little cousin (US Army, Nursing Corps) married an Engineer.
