Why did the Army decide on 5-1/2" for the new barrel length from the 7-1/2" M1873?
It appears so that it would fit the new holsters they'd recently ordered for the S&W Schofield.
Really!
That holster used a lot less leather and could be adapted to the Colt by just punching a second hole in the flap.
Much cheaper than new holsters just for a longer gun.
Uh...
I am honestly hoping that this isn't true, but...
Procurement has produced many stranger decisions that were completely true.
