Anti-Hi-Point

If the Hi-Point is the cheapest example of a gun that reliably sends lead down range, there's an opposite end of the spectrum...

There's many guns that cost far more than the average Glock (also known for being ugly and boringly reliable) which offer nothing over the more prosaic guns.

Honest.

I am not sure I should name names... but how many times have you heard something like, "The best $600 pistol you can get for $1,100!"

There's a lot of that out there.

What distinguishes one pistol from another besides the logo on the side?

They all go bang most all the time.

Most of them are accurate enough for social situations.

They are all available in a suitable chambering.

You can even choose a size and capacity from a list of options.

It was an accident of fate that put me into Smith and Wessons after a long association with Colt and Glock.  (Another thank you to Willard for pushing me over the brink!  Though FuzzyGeff gets some credit here too.)

In a lot of cases it boils down to whether you want a safety or not.  Glock, no.  M&P, if you'd like.

Now there's even a choice between plastic polymer and metal for the frame with some models!  Though you pay some extra tariff for something that's not hydrocarbon based.

The world is your oyster for pistol selection!

Especially if you are willing to buy used.  There are some stupid good deals out there in guns that used to be owned by a police department.

  1. how many of have friends or associates who spent a boat load of money on a pistol or rifle because it has this and had that and a super duper whatchamacallit and still shoot like a 3 year old.,. the gun doesn't make you shoot any better if you suck at shooting... fundamentals and practice make you a better shot...panzer guy

  2. I have owned a Hipoint C9, and it was pretty much what they claim, and anyone who ever owned one will usually say, as well. It just works, for less than 200$. The gun is useable, which is what you ask of a handgun. Made in the US, with a lifetime warrantee, it is what it is.
The biggest problem with the Hipoint pistols now it the fact that there are so many higher quality gun companies making entry level concealed carry pistols, for street prices not much higher than you see Hipoints. I am thinking especially about the Taurus G2C, right now, because I had a G2, the second generation after the first one had problems, and carried it for a couple of years, with great success. The gun is selling now for just a bit over 200$, on sale.
I just saw a Taurus G3C, with 3 mags, for 190$, 165$ after a 25$ mail in rebate. On gun.deals, an aggregator of gun sales. You just can't beat that, for a much better gun than the Hipoint, IMHO.
They even have kits for sale, minus the receiver, of AR rifles and pistols, for 220$-240$. These likely will be made up of stuff that is dug out of the bottom of bins, during Xmas sales. They require s+h, and assembly, but for someone wanting to have the chance to either put an AR together, or to just have a cheap AR in the back of his closet, this might be a way to do it on the cheap. Just know what you are getting before you order, because it is not going to be much, I would guess.
