The Chomps Collection has loaned a couple extra .45 ACP pistols for comparison.
Photos not yet taken because I don't have space on the work bench for all seven guns. Five's the limit there.
The outside gun-picture location is currently occupied with a Harvey project and must wait for ideal light anyways.
But very soon we're going to have a Kahr CT45 and a Star PD added into the comparison.
I think that Willard loans me these guns because he knows I'll clean them to make them more photogenic. I am a labor saving device!
But pics are coming, along with objective measurements like weight and trigger pull. Subjective opinion will accompany.
McThag, would you care to include a Glock G-30? You've already got the G21, so perhaps not, but size and fit-in-the-hand is different. It's my carry gun (largely due to my already having a ton of 45ACP, and it fitting my ham-hands).
ReplyDeleteLemme know.

The more the merrier, are we talking loaning it to me, selling it, you taking a bunch of pics?
DeleteA range report is going to, eventually be included.
I think my email is easy to figger out... McThag gmail etc
If I were a bit closer my most interesting .45 ACP is a "well loved" Ballester Molina. It was the cheapest grade available from SARCO. When I got it, the barrel looked like a sewer pipe on the inside and it had that well known rattle that well worn military/police issue 1911 type pistols often have. The finish on the outside is completely gone. It was originally blued, but only a few crevices and places where holster wear couldn't get to still show any signs of it. Obviously someone, or more likely several someones actually used this thing because the wear it showed was the kind you see from large round counts. When I got it SARCO had installed a new set of rather ugly original style grips and a surprisingly decent Wolfe spring kit in it. And even more surprisingly despite the loose fit and the raunchy bore, it actually shot 7 rounds into a paper plate at 7 meters. Not superb, but it would be effective. Anyway, I peened the slide to make it tight and hand fitted a match barrel and link I bought from MidwayUSA for a reasonable price. That made a huge improvement in accuracy bringing it right up to or maybe even better than my Springfield GI and better than my WWII made Remington Rand 1911. It still looks like hell because I haven't refinished it or replaced the ugly grips. Unfortunately 1911 grips don't quite fit correctly on a Ballester Molina, which despite looking like a 1911, actually is a copy of the Star design. It has a trigger that pivots instead of sliding and they eliminated the grip safety of the 1911 (something I have to admit, despite some considering it heresy, I don't really miss). So anyway, it is kind of the "rat rod" or "sleeper" of .45 pistols...
