It appears that BATFE is bouncing back any and all Form 1 for a silencer on the grounds that you can't make a suppressor without making parts and every single part is, in and of itself, a suppressor.
I shit you not.
Write your congress critter and see if we can get some traction for a bill that redefines the damn things as an assembly or at least restores the definition to the serialized portion of that assembly.
Even better, get them to remove silencers, SBRs and SBSs from the NFA altogether.
I'd say to scrap the whole NFA, but there's no appetite in Peoria for things making that much sense.
Ah, the BATFE, crazy from the start. What's next? "Nice iron ore you have there, that shows constructive intent!"
ReplyDeleteIs this that whole "constructive possession" thing, whereby, if I have one or more parts of a suppressor, I have a suppressor, and need a permission slip?
ReplyDeleteIIUC, that would mean anyone in possession of a Maglite torch, or washers with the right size hole to be used as baffles, or steel wool, would become an instant felon.
Interestingly, and tangentially, I understand that a 1/2" x 28 TPI thread is often used on firearm barrels to attach a suppressor. That size of tap and/or die is unavailable in tool shops throughout western Oz. Simply unavailable - not singly, not in kits, nowhere.
There doesn't appear to be anything written in law, and thus nothing stopping tool and die makers from making a custom set, you just cannot buy that size over the counter.
Because you know, it would be impossible for someone with a tap and die set (let alone a metal lathe) to cut other size threads on a barrel. But 1/2x28 is a common enough size here in the US that tap and dies are available for it. Of course Australia is even less of a free country than the US... which ain't too free itself anymore.
DeleteThat seems to be the "thought process" behind whatever/whoever is responsible for the restriction, and yes it is ridiculous.
DeleteHow long do you think it will be before a large PET bottle and a roll of duct tape becomes
"constructive possession" of a suppressor in the US, and expressly forbidden in Oz, because of the obesity crisis, or "for the children"? /sarc
