Never Run Out Of Material

If all I did was post about every little foible of whatever Windows OS I was running, I would have a daily post and I primarily use Ubuntu and an obsolete Mac Pro!

The Win7 installs are secondary use only.

And I still have something to complain about daily.

Notice that I don't complain about Ubuntu 20.04.3 or OSX 10.6.8?

And this has been true for decades of using a computer for stuff.

I get that M$ needed to crack down on piracy and all, but their activation process is opaque and mercurial.

One machine activated just by clicking the button.  The other needed me to phone the hotline and...

Listen.

To.

The.

Instructions.

Very.

Slowly.

  1. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Unless there is some software that you absolutely need, and it only runs on Windows, Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is the only way to go. Linux will almost always run faster and smoother than Windows on any machine that you choose to install Linux to.

    1. I concur 100%. I dabbled with Linux twice before. The first time my inability to figure out the instructions to play DVD's made me go back to Win98. The second ended when I got the Mac Pro.

    2. 110% concur here too... I've never actually used Windows for person use. I've had spouses that at various times insisted on being provided a Windows machine and support for it, which I begrudgingly provided. I've had to use Windows to some extent or another at work in the past (presently thankfully my work is all Linux or MacOS). Despite avoiding Windows as much as possible and dealing with their stuff definitely less than 10% of my computing time, 90% of my computer frustration tends to come from Microsoft products. That tells me their stuff is pretty much completely garbage.
If Microsoft suddenly went belly up it wouldn't hurt my feeling at all.

FWIW, I'm probably a lot more nerdy than McThag, but I've never had trouble playing DVDs on Linux... Or copying them... In fact I think the latter is easier to do in Linux, and the resultant copies are free from CSS too.

  2. The local computer wizards have seen an uptake on attacks of Linux systems. Which tells me that Linux is getting much more popular and Microsoft is losing footing.

    1. The good news is it's inherently more secure than Windows. Makes them hackers work for it.

    2. This. As long as you keep behind some kind of (properly configured) firewall appliance and keep up with updates, and generally just think before you enter your password, the likelihood of getting compromised if you are using Linux is pretty small. And definitely lower than Windows in any case. Microsoft over the years has consistently been the worst... most vulnerabilities and generally the slowest to respond to them and the most live exploits in the wild.
