Straightforward

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force has a unique patch:

The reason the snake is smoking a pipe comes from a quotation:

"Mais fácil uma cobra fumar um cachimbo, do que a FEB embarcar para o combate."

Which means, "It's more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe, than for the BEF to go the front and fight."

The BEF did go to the front in Italy and they did fight, and they wore that patch.

Got to love a sense of humor in military heraldry.

  1. The way I heard it, Hitler said that it was likelier for snakes to smoke pipes than for Brazil to get involved in the ETO in WWII. The Brazilians heard it...and when their troops landed in Europe, guess what patch they were wearing?
