GURPS Loadouts: Low-Tech Armor details several sets of historical armor and generally comes up with better protection than you'd come up with by buying complete suits.
But it does so at the expense of buying every individual hit location and sub-location it's own armor.
It's a bloody slog to make a complete suit of armor this way, and very complicated at late-TL3 and TL4.

This is also an example of the sort of full suit that a noble of Henry VIII's court would have worn to France in 1543. Possibly slightly better protection at a much higher price by applying duplex plate to the plates...
