Today, in the USA, it's Veteran's Day.
A day set aside for those who went in and came out.
It seems odd to have to say it, but today is not for the fallen in the USA; that's Memorial Day.
It isn't for those whom are still serving; that's Armed Forces Day.
If you know a vet, buy them a beer, take them out to dinner, get them laid.
Remind them of all the freebies available!
When you hit the places giving out freebies, be gracious and buy something that's got big margins (like a beer) because it wasn't so long ago that nobody but us and the post office remembered Veteran's Day at all.
Plus! Tip the wait staff like you'd paid for the meal, not on just the cost of the beer.
Also, let the stolen valor people go. This is the only validation they're getting in their pathetic lives, can you think of a harsher punishment than letting be what they are? Don't save them!
If you were here I'd take you out to our local brewpub. Can the thought be taken for the deed?
ReplyDeleteI drove in the Austin Veteran's Day Parade today and then attended the ceremonies at the State Capitol building afterwards. 67th annual. The car club I'm in has participated in it since way before I became a member. I don't know exactly how long. I'd have to ask the club historian I guess. I know we've had a seat on the parade board/planning committee for at least the last 8 years I've been in the club. One of the main things that we do is coordinate vehicles for the dignitaries in the parade. Parade Marshall and this year they keynote speakers one of whom is a 4 star General and the other retired Brigadeer General. One of our members who is a veteran (and Gold Star parent) gave the introductory and closing prayers. I'm not a praying person, but his words were still well heard.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the club was founded by veterans who met in the big VA hospital near Austin sometime in 1972 or 1973. The primary founder had only one arm, the other major instigator only had one leg. The third had all his appendages but was also a disabled Viet Nam Vet. Many other members over the years have also been veterans. Anyway, I'm really terrible at telling the story. The club also supports VFW 8787. I always buy a beer or 3 when we have our meetings there. Usually some snack food out of their little kitchen too. We make a donation for use of the meeting space and we take part in their big annual fundraising events. Usually they have a Chili and BBQ cookoff (this is Texas so no beans if you want to have a chance to win) - beans are a separate category usually.
Anyway we try to do what we can.
