Thanks to a conversation with Technomad I am thinking about Motorad BMW.
The pictured R65 is not the bike the Bimmerkundt rode when I was, initially, on an AMF Sportster or VF500 Interceptor.
Post-service I was a Suzuki person on a GS500L.
I'm happy at the half-liter level.
I can almost see myself with an R65.
The Bimmerkundt rode something like an R90S or R100. They shunned a simple, normal riding position bike like the R65.
Now, I wonder if such things are even remotely affordable. Ebay don't seem to have any listings...
Since BMW Airheads are my thing, I would advise a mainstream model, R60, R75, R80, R90, or R100. These were more plentiful with better parts interchange. The R65 was a model of its own with some relation to the R80GS off road bike.
ReplyDeleteNo BMW of that era is super powerful so an R80 or R100 from 77-84 does well or go more modern with a single shock model from 85-97. They turn up on CL often enough or try a specialist group like the BMW Airhead club Airheads.org or BMWMOA. It looks like $3-5k still gets a usable bike.
Things I like about BMWs: They're hell for reliable, not nearly as instantly attractive to thieves as Harleys, and nobody ever chanted: "Beemer, Beemer, made of tin---ride it out and push it in!"
