Sad. The FL cars could have been moved to higher ground, the CA owners were not afforded the time necessary. The losses to our automotive heritage in CA is going to be horrific. I sure hope Leno has a set of private swimming pools full of water and the equipment to protect his garages, though there are (were?) far more vintage and classic car owners and vehicles stored in that state than any other. Back in 1981 I purchased my E-type Jag in LA and towed the basket case back to MI. Took me 7 years for a full 95 point restoration. Sold it around 1993 as funds were in a squeeze at that time and someone else really wanted it pretty bad. Sniff! Such is life.
ReplyDeleteMoving your car to higher ground in FL needs prediction time we don't often get because once the cone of uncertainty solidifies, all the tow-trucks, trailers and flatbeds are being used.
DeleteAnd if you can own and restore two Daytonas... You can afford a car carrier, semi-tractor and get the license to drive it. Just sayin'.
The real difference I'm seeing is that, around here, every couple of years the power company comes around and clears around our lines and the county walks the easements clearing brush.
The wag in me says what high ground in Florida? On a serious note, California didn't implement the power line clearing, fuel reduction and prescribed burns they should have after the Paradise Fire. While one cannot change wind patterns there's a lot that can be done to reduce effects. Also deter arsonists, a lot of the LA fires were human caused
DeleteOh, no argument there at all. The part about brush clearing and maintaining forests is where the entire west coast has gone crazy, as in zero such activity allowed by the bloody greens. They are most definitely reaping what they have sown due to negligence at every level for many, many years. As to moving things in FL, had not considered your geography on getting to the "highlands" as being so difficult. It did occur to me that anyone who has the money to store multiple Daytonas might also have the money to own 2 or more storage lifts. I have one in my workshop that raises a car 4 to 5 ft up (it actually goes 6 ft but I am limited by the barn not being tall enough), from the photo of the submerged vehicles, 4 or more ft up would have kept them from flooding. And a China made lift is probably are cheaper than last minute tow job, I pai $1K for mine years ago, they are now $2K ;-)
ReplyDeleteI used to live in AZ for a stretch, loved finding some of the small towns outside of the metro area where the local garage had the lifts outdoors, big honking single piston about 12" in diameter with adjustable X style arms, the good ole boy mechanic working on it right there in the dirt (just the piston was anchored in concrete). Fun times, bet the EPA has made all that illegal now. Hope you don't get into that depth of storm surge, it is not fun. My former automotive engineering assistant, with whom I traveled a fair bit when flogging HMMWV around the globe, retired to Fr Meyers and a couple or 7 years back there was a whopping storm that literally flooded the ground floor of his apartment most of the way up the wall, he sent a picture taken from the bedroom above, not a pretty sight.
