Yes, the EM drive needed extraordinary proof, because it was an extraordinary claim. What you did not see was a flat refusal to even bother with testing it.
The inventor made his data set available for others to attempt to replicate his experiment and detailed the conditions he got his data from.
Notice how this differs from, say, East Anglia and their climate "research".
