Today, in 1776, the first unit of US Cavalry was formed!
Of course, it was a regiment of dragoons rather than true cavalry; thus setting a trend that lasted until the horses got replaced by tracks.

And even after I commissioned and found myself a Second Lieutenant of Infantry I still wore my Stetson with a hand made blue cord when I could get away with it.

My company bought the Stetsons and the whole spurs thing wasn't a thing in the 1st Infantry Division (Forward), but our CO talked the colonel into letting us wear them.
I should have kept the damn hat.
