I am getting sick, as a sci-fi fan, of being accused of being sexist and not accepting of female characters.
Well, one of my absolute favorite characters is Chrisjen Avasarala from The Expanse.
OK, accusers...
She's not young, blonde and hot.
But she's absolutely great!
PS: I would pay money to listen to Shohreh Aghdashloo read off her grocery list.

Wait? SciFi geeks are sexist?
ReplyDeleteI remember reading (due to a book in a library) early 'Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century' comics and the women in them were much more forward and strong than women in regular fiction at the time. Asimov had some strong females. Heinlein did too, even before he went all weird (Peewee from 'Have Space Suit, Will Travel' was, even as a child, smart, strong, and more capable than the thugs she fought against.)
David Drake has lots of good females in his book. So does David Weber, John Ringo, Larry Correia, Lous McMaster Bujold, and on, and on and on... And that's just from the supposedly mysogenistic Baen Books publishing house.
The remake of 'BattleStar Galactica' was full of strong women who weren't retconned Mary Sues.
Same with Star Trek in most of its various versions, until Voyager (sorry, Janeway shoulda been shot right off and the crew gone yo-ho-hoing through the galaxy.) and that garbage on right now somewhere.
Did anyone see any issues with the females in the various 'Stargate' tv shows?
Is this all because we (the world) hated the new Ghostbusters or Mary Sue Skywalker?
As to Shohreh... Heck, she could make the Obituaries sound... sexy. What a wonderfully alto furry (resonance, not funny animal suit) voice. And a good reason to invade Iran and kill all the males...
And ah, crap. Though Shohreh's voice is wonderful, Chrisjen Avasarala's voice just does something to my spine... Makes me all woogly and reminds me of my super-hot chem teacher in college.
