They Called Me Mad

Ammunition Hoarding

Do you know what was on the shelves at Bass Pro yesterday?

.270 Winchester, 7.62x54mmR, .30-06 and .300 Savage.

3/4 are the mainstream oddballs.

Admittedly, they are mostly Fudd rounds, but a Fudd round will suffice for many situations.

They weren't cheap, but they weren't inflated either.

While you should stock the ammo for your AR or AK deep, have a rifle in a caliber that doesn't go out of stock in the panics too.

Shotgun ammo is still in abundance.  Don't forget to have a shotgun.

  1. 7.62x54mm R, for the Mosin Nagant rifle which is can be found in the gun safe of most preppers.
30-06 is still a popular high power hunting round.

  2. Don't forget .22-250 and .243 Winchester.

Those were two of the most common in the last couple of panics that I found everywhere.

When I was at Bass pro shop a couple weeks ago they were completely out of defensive 12 and 20 gauge ammo.

But had as much steel, lead, exotic metal birdshot as you could want.

    1. They still had 00 Buck in 12ga 2-3/4".

Nary a slug to be found.

      Lots of #4.

Zero .410. The lack of .410 makes me think that the shops only having Judges in stock for a bit led to a run on .45 Colt and .410.

  3. At Scheel's in Omaha two weeks ago, they had tons of .270, .30-06, and .17HMR. I scored the last couple of boxes of ..22WMR for my Kel-Tec PMR-30. Everything else they had was not-run-of-the-mill stuff.

  4. In a SHTF situation, I'd rather have a "Fudd" rifle that I'd practiced with and was reasonably accurate with, than a fancy modern "assault weapon" that I couldn't hit the broad-side of a barn with.

  5. Nothing wrong with 30-06. I have five rifles in that caliber and a case of ammo for them... :-)

    1. I have rifles in all four calibers mentioned.

      FuzzyGeff's .243 is here too.

  6. I was in the local Bi-Mart last week, looking at the ammo shelves, and I noticed "peeking" around the sign that lists what they don't have was the edge of a box that was marked "5.7".

I asked the fellow behind the counter to move the sign a little and saw what appeared to be at least 500, and maybe as many as 800 rounds of American Eagle 5.7 X 28. For $24.95/box.

He said no one had been buying it!

I can only buy 2 boxes at a time, so it's going to take me few more days.
