Tonight while debating the reversal of Roe v Wade, The Lovely Harvey expressed the concern that this is the first step of a campaign to return women to servitude.
It wasn't that long ago that she needed my permission to get a tubal ligation, for example.
She cited an uptick in violence against women as part of her concerns.
The kind of folks most exultant about the decision are precisely the kind of people who seem OK with the idea of chattel wives.
I'm of the opinion that no person is chattel.
The most important question I have about rights is, "are you a person?"
A person gets rights and everyone gets the same rights.
Rich or poor.
Smart or stupid.
Male or female.
Straight or gay.
Minority or majority.
Devout or athiest.
Everyone.
I am optimistic that this wasn't the first step to unpersoning women, but I think we should be vigilant.
The only (non-muslim) people that seem to want women to be subjugated are the Leftists. All the conservatives, ultra-conservatives, semi-conservatives and squishy Republican people I know want people to be not forced into non-gender equality bullscat. So I think The Lovely Harvey is going to be very safe.
ReplyDeleteLike that stupid distopian novel and movie and series "The Handmaiden's Tale," the only ones that are bemoaning TMT are leftists.
Now, if there was a thing that made women 90% unfertile at fertile age, yes, for society to survive, fertile women will be lowered to baby machine status. But that's in a screwed-up end of species thingy.
"The kind of folks most exultant about the decision are precisely the kind of people who seem OK with the idea of chattel wives." I've not seen this and am unclear why you would think this.
ReplyDeleteHere's my opposing view. Under Roe, men had no say in the decision to keep or abort the baby. If the woman decided to abort, the father could not stop the death of his future child. Yet if the mother decided to have the baby, the father was obligated to support the child until adulthood. How was this justice? And don't get me started on the rights of the child, which don't seem to exist.
One more thing. If someone killed a pregnant woman, they were typically charged with two counts of murder. Yet the same prosecutor would be silent if that mother had aborted the child.
