I am sure I am the only person who's considering rewriting the background of Twilight: 2000 to take into account how miserably the Russian army performed in Ukraine.
Given that there was a nuclear war, it's not too hard to get a post-apocalypse setting with this new information, but the Battle of Kalisz might happen a bit further east... and obviously not in a Polish city. Donetsk, perhaps?
Free City of Krakow Stalingrad?
Pirates of the Vistula Volga?
Ruins of Warsaw Moscow?
Changes things a bunch, actually.
Especially since the real theme of T2K is reestablishing civilization and rebuilding, not continuing the war.
Could be lots of fun!
The game may be more technical. Part of Russia's use of "hypersonic" missiles may be a threat against eastern Europe. Russia could hit high-value targets (power generation, refineries, shipping ports, rail yards, etc) without having to go nuclear or have their military directly face modern NATO weapons. Rebuilding Europe after several years in the dark and cold would be a horrendous challenge. I am sure that Russia is similarly mapped for visits by unstoppable cruise missiles. Neither the Baltic states nor Russian have particularly pleasant winters. Rebuilding societies after Such a technological war might be radically different than after the destruction of a nuclear exchange. Russia might think that their limited military might do well against NATO armies worried about the survival of their families. Might be a completely different book.
ReplyDeleteHypersonic missiles are things they didn't have in 1997 when the nukes starting flying. But the doctrinal problems were definitely present and my revisiting the setting would be with an eye towards what would happen in '97 to '00 not what would happen if the war kicked off today.
DeleteAnd it STILL requires that their economy be robust enough to survive that long; which is a bigger stretch than them being militarily as competent as the CIA claimed.
