A Sling A Sling A Marverlous Thing

What if Goliath was wearing DR 4 scale?

Lobbing a stone:

Heavy Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 2d cr, 36/72; 2-12 raw, 0-8 penetrates, 0-8 damage (average of 3)

Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 1d+2 pi, 72/120; 3-8 raw, 0-4 penetrates, 0-4 damage (average of 1)

Dart Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 1d+2 imp, 72/120; 3-8 raw, 0-4 penetrates, 0-8 damage (average of 2)

Staff Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 2d-1 pi, 120/180; 1-11 raw, 0-7 penetrates, 0-7 damage (average of 2)

Sending a lead bullet:

Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 2d-1 pi, 144/240; 1-11 raw, 0-7 penetrates, 0-7 damage (average of 2)

Staff Sling $20, Shots 1(2), 2d pi, 240/360; 2-12 raw, 0-8 penetrates, 0-8 damage (average of 3)

Clearly, I've been underestimating the value of a sling in GURPS, they're better than bows much of the time!  Especially in the confines of a dungeon.

  1. Wow, GURPS is a very data driven role playing game it seems.

Now I think I understand why while we have a pretty active old school Traveller RPG locally as well as pre Neu D&D gamers nobody does GURPS. We do have a lot of books of the new stuff but prefer the storytelling gaming of the older stuff.

    1. GURPS is not data driven. It's not even particularly complex. What it is is comprehensive.

Any system is only as good or bad as the GM and the players.

Do you realize that you asked a question, that I took the time to answer, then dismissed the system because it HAD the answer to the question you asked?

    2. Oh and nearly all of my answer is work I did, following the rules, and not something that needs calculated to play the game.

    3. PS look up data driven. It does not mean what your context says you think it means.

  2. Slings are bad-ass. And the ammo available is pretty amazing, from simple stones to round rocks or balls to the Roman's favorite, a lead 'almond' shape that was able to penetrate some armors.

Though, of course, the damage question is; crushing vs penetration. Blobs do crush damage against harder surfaces, while you can get some penetration against soft surfaces. Whereas the aforementioned lead almond did have significant penetration versus some armors while also doing crushing damage against heavier armor.

As to Goliath, well, dumbass should have been wearing a full helm. Then, other than being winged in the head and getting slightly disoriented, he would have survived. But, noooo, had to be vain about his ugly mug and got beaned for it. Dumbass...
