Will going GURPS 4e TL4 ruin a fantasy setting by introducing firearms?
I've got player data showing that the rate of fire will deter them from taking a gun instead of a bow from how seldom someone would take the slower firing crossbow.
Guns are even slower than crossbows.
But they could be game changers for people who lay in wait for the adventurers. A volley at the beginning of the fight could change the outcome...
I wish I'd remembered to play test this with FuzzyGeff when he was down.
And much better for the Defense, as in organ guns and such. Firing from a protected position and such.
ReplyDeleteIt's the hand grenades and petards that will make life interesting. Of course, after the first 'grenadier' goes up in a bang from being hit by fire or magic missiles, other party members may express a preference for any other grenadier to be far far away from the party.
Tactics, like a couple of Mages softening up the battleline with mass weapons before limiting themselves to safer close action spell craft. We've all been in FRPG where a friendly mage drops a fireball into the melee, harming won team members.
ReplyDeleteFirearms like that saying advanced technology is magic can be a salvo, then drop the matchlocks and draw swords.
What is the GURPS Longbow rate of fire and damage compared to a large bore matchlock?
This finely crafted link should get you to the posts where I talked about the specific rates of fire and damages for bows, crossbows and early guns.

Your link was to crossbows. Interesting a windlass crossbow was so powerful.
DeleteA side note about a longbow was in comments.
That should have gotten three posts where I mention crossbows in GURPS, including ST 14 and ST 17 longbows.
