Martini

I am experimenting with gin and vermouth.

5:1 ratio is about flavorless.

4:2 ratio means I can taste the vermouth, but both cases suppress the florals in the gin.

In both cases, the olive is a welcome burst of flavor.  This makes me think that a dirty martini is what I'll like best.

PS: In both cases, stirred not shaken.  Ian Fleming and James Bond are wrong.

  1. According to my old bartender's guide roughly 4:1 was standard around 1950 before everyone got into the performative dry Martini with homeopathic levels of vermouth.

  2. I've tried Martinis both the Vodka and dirty variety. I decided I like Gin better with tonic and a large spritz of lime... But if I drink a Martini, I agree with you, Gin & dirty is the way to go. I have tried a number of Gins including the usual famous British imports. Surprisingly one of the near local distilleries is actually one of my favorites. They even make their Gin with locally grown Juniper berries.
