The Glitch

The T2K conversion was originally written in MS Word.

Not sure which edition, but I think it ran on Win98.

I opened it in OpenOffice and saved-as an odt.

Once I got the Macs, this odt got opened in NeoOffice and edited from there.

It still opens in NeoOffice correctly, most of the time.

With OpenOffice and LibreOffice the 44 page document flickers just after opening and becomes a 56 page document and a large section in the large caliber guns section disappears and has 14 blank pages in its place.

I have both OpenOffice and NeoOffice on the Mac, so copy paste from one to the other might work.

Since I now export it to pdf, retyping to get better sections might not be a bad idea.  Originally I just used the odt.

What else do I have to do?

  1. i may have this program somewhere, not sure if it's small enough to email but you could try this if you still have the original word document and then fix it from there... (Microsoft Office Word Viewer
The Microsoft Word Viewer is no longer available for download and will no longer receive security updates. To continue viewing Word files for free, we recommend installing the Word mobile app or storing documents in OneDrive or Dropbox, where Word Online opens them in your browser)...found it ( https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_office_word_viewer.html )...panzer guy

  2. There can be a few things to try.

Log into Google, upload it to Drive. Then open it in Google Docs from Drive, and see if it looks fine. If so, keep it there, download it as a variety of formats, or whatever. Drive and Docs are 'free' with your Google account, so nothing other than your web browser is needed.

Open the odt in OpenOffice, and from the File menu, select "Export" (or maybe Save As, I don't have OpenOffice around any more), then export/'save as' it as an RTF (Rich Text Format) file.

With the RTF, you should be able to open it in TextEdit on the Mac and see if it looks fine there.

Or the RTF can be opened in NeoOffice to check that as well.

The RTF can be uploaded to Google Docs for format checking, too.

With OpenOffice, you can also export/'save as' into other formats, like older MS Word formats (Word 95 is one that comes to mind). You can try a variety of the different formats.

Upload the other formats to Google Drive/Docs as well as open in NeoOffice to verify readability.

Have the file open in OpenOffice, select all (Opt-A) then copy and paste into a blank Google Docs/NeoOffice file. Verify formatting, save, etc.

If it's successfully exported as a PDF, with formatting intact, you may be able to open it with the OSX Preview app (or a web browser), then copy and paste the text into TextEdit, or OpenOffice, or Google Docs without loosing too much of your formatting.

These are just some of the ways around your current challenge.

I offered before to attempt some of these for you, and I can also do it with the browser based Microsoft Word app, too. I have pretty current OSX (13.1), Linux, and Windows available to me, and I do like puzzles of this sort. I'm the 'freddyboomboom' that sent you the G3 bayonet a few years ago if you're wondering if you can trust me. Gmail is my email service for this username.

  3. If you are going to type it into better sections, rather than cutting and pasting from one office program to another you might cut and paste into a text editor to strip out the formatting then move it to the format you prefer. While this may not copy tables and such you can probably transfer those seperately.
