How Safe Is It?

The Vilani use a gauss rifle that's near identical to the 4mm the Terrans use in performance.

6d+2(3) pi-

That averages to 23 points raw damage.

Thanks to the armor divisor, that will penetrate 69 points of DR.  The down side is whatever makes it through the armor is cut in half.

Terran torso armor comes in at DR 75, so you're relatively safe.

Extremities are far more vulnerable.

Soldiers should keep their heads down.  The infantry combat helmet is pathetic with DR 27.

I can see the space combat helmet being substituted.

I'm also considering statting out a heavier infantry helmet because when you arms are better protected than your noggin, your confidence wanes.

The Terran Marine laser rifle doesn't penetrate near so well with its 6d(2) burn.

It will only cut through 42 DR on average, but it's recoilless.  That matters in zero G.

  1. Odd that the Vilani (curious way to spell villains, eh?) don't put an old school version of the under barrel M203 to make guacamole out of Terran's. I suspect the blast damage would make it a Monty Python Black Knight scenario "It's only a flesh wound" as they lose arms and legs.

So, what is the Terran Vs Vilani weapons vs armor look like?

    1. I have a pic of a Vilani soldier around here somewhere.

That look carries on into the Third Imperium.

The helmet reminds me of the rebels at the beginning of A New Hope with a full face mask.

    2. Sorry I was unclear. I was asking like a Player Character how effective was Terran weapons against Vilani Body Armor? Often like old style D&D Orcs the NPCs are often easily chopped to bits.

    3. Remember, with the Vilani, if it's good enough for their 200th great grand progenitor, it's good enough for them. Rapid advancement is not a Vilani trait. It's something they pride themselves on.

To Vilani, Terrans are weird thinking barbarians.

    4. The Vilani and Terran troops are very equally matched. In game terms, almost identical equipment.

The Terrans, being weird thinking barbarians, simply use tactics the Imperials have no idea how to counter.

Not in the book of war! Bad form!

  2. Your comment about lasers for fighting in space because they don’t recoil resonated with me. I’ve been thinking about our new Space Force and what weapons they would use in a man-to-man fight. The only thing I could think of, besides blades, is something along the lines of the GyroJet. Does anyone have any other ideas?

    1. The later plasma or fusion gun man portable gets a tiny little grav motor to counter the recoil. Some, like the FGMP-15 get a grav motor to help you carry it without a battlesuit.

Once you have tiny reactionless motors to counter recoil, you can shoot anything.

Those aren't around until after the Interstellar Wars time period.

Gyrojet style ammo is more viable when it doesn't depend on kinetic energy to do damage to the target, but that means a large diameter to be effective.
