I think something needs to be put out there with regards to actors and actresses being upset that they didn't win an Oscar.
They appear to be upset that it was a white person who won.
There appears to be an expectation that they should win every time because they are not white.
Two things stand out about this.
First: They're not even a plurality of the roles. Dare I say it, they're in the minority.
They're demanding that they be considered disproportionately to their number.
Somehow that's not racism.
Second: Perhaps they should consider selecting better roles in better movies.
The actress in question did a great job, but at the end of the day it's just another check off the boxes same movie they've been doing for years.
I like Angela Basset. She's done excellent work. She probably should have been nominated for "What's Love Got To Do With It."
"Wakanda Forever" wasn't worthy of an award for "best supporting actress" even if she rocked the role.
The best actor in a shitty movie doesn't win awards.
I hope she gets the role that earns her that crummy statue.
can't remember last time I "went" to a movie... watched the new top gun at home... it wasn't bad... only movie I care to see this year is wick... Hollywood has lost it... they keep making woke shit and then wonder why no one pays to see it ... people know a good when they see it ...panzer guy
ReplyDeleteButthurt for losing is always a bad look.
ReplyDeleteAnd Jamie Lee Curtis won the SAG-AFTRA award for Best Supporting Actress as well, which is 1:1 predictive of who's winning the Oscar for the last 29 years running, because the exact same people vote in both cases, so Bassett knew, to a metaphysical certainty, she wasn't bringing the Oscar home either.
(For that matter, Curtis' mock surprise, or even Brendan Fraser's, at the announcements, was just more acting. The SAG Awards were handed out in February, FFS.)
There are 160,000 actors and actresses in SAG-AFTRA, and only 4 of them are going to win the Oscar in any year. Even among the actual finalist nominees, the chance of winning is still only 1 in 5. Nobody admires a sore loser under those circumstances. If she couldn't handle the loss, she should have stayed at home.
All this noise is doing is poisoning the well against Bassett ever winning one, no matter what role she does. The Academy has a long memory, and while they make mistakes, in the long run, the voters are never wrong. Bassett - or whoever is shooting their mouths off on her behalf - are simply alienating everyone who could vote differently, for the rest of their lifetimes. Which is liable to be longer than Bassett has an acting career.
Dulce et decorum est.
