I've A Theory

The controlling cartel handed over five henchmen to law enforcement over the killing of two Americans and kidnapping of the two other people they were with.

I've a theory.

This little kerfuffle pissed off a lot of people.

If there's something that the world understands is pissing off America is dangerous.

Fucking with America isn't often dangerous, we don't get pissed off about it most of the time.

But the American, "we're going killing because we're pissed about 9/11," response rests in the bones of a lot of nations and organizations about what happens if America gets mad.

Coming on the heels of the Mexican president blaming the victims for the US appetite for drugs...

It's a moment that's poised to turn into nation-building from Brownsville to the Guatemalan border.

I, for one, have said that if Mexico can't get its shit together with regards of pawning it's unwanted on our welfare system we should move America as far south as it takes to stop the influx.

  1. We should have annexed Mexico a long time ago... Given that we're already propping them up, it seems like it is probably a false economy to think that what we are spending now is cheaper than what it would cost if we just owned it all. Frankly, the Mexican people would probably be better off because their government has always been systematically corrupt to the core. The Spanish colonial governments were corrupt, Every government they've had since then has inherited that legacy. What they have now though is the worst. The government is just a false figurehead. The cartels really rule Mexico. The further outside of their Federal District and the tourist areas, the more the cartels control with an iron fist. The Mexican people deserve better. Our system isn't perfect, and might get less so after ingesting Mexico, but it is and still would be better than what they have now. A lot of Mexico is beautiful and full of of natural resources and if it was even half ass well governed, there would be a lot of potential for prosperity there. If we controlled Mexico their relatively small southern border would be much easier to defend than the massive one we are completely failing to control now. And the reality is that most of the people crossing our border aren't even from Mexico, they just pass through there. A lot aren't even from Central or South America, some come from the Caribbean, Middle East, Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. Controlling who could get tourist visas, etc., would make it possible to get a handle on those issues.

  3. 1) The cartels can cough up a few henchmen to avoid a more robust response. They're trying not to crap where they eat.

    2) Annexing Mexico is a non-starter. A 10-mile wide Death Zone south of the current border, where nothing larger than 4-leged coyotes lived, would suffice.

    3) Mexico should be told that either they pay a premium per illegal already here, or we're sending them back. If necessary, dropped from aircraft at altitude. Their choice.
Charging them 1 barrel of oil per year per head is a fair tariff. That'd be 20-40M bbl. of oil/year, free, to the U.S. right now.
We could simply dump it into the strategic petroleum reserve until that's topped off, and after that, dump it on the market to bring prices down.

    4) If Mexico's complaint is they can't handle their excess population because of the economy, we make them a deal-deal:
They sign Baja California over to us on a 99-year lease. We cobble together a group of folks like Jack Welch, Elon Musk, et al to run the new territory. Everyone there currently gets moved back into Mexico proper Until Further Notice. The western side of the peninsula gets turned into the mother of all resorts, from TJ to Cabo, one long string of resorts, restaurants, hotels, casinos, etc. Tax-free, duty free. Vegas and the French Riviera would pale in comparison. All service jobs, and as much of the middle management as they could handle, would go to Mexican nationals. Ditto for building it in the first place and maintaining it. Only rule: U.S. law, and law enforcement, is the only one recognized. Capital crimes, including drugs: death penalty, or LWOP. One strike and you're out of the pool. And served in Mexican prisons. 10% of the profits revert to the US govt. The rest gets split between the management consortium (30%), and the Mexican government (60%), to fund education and healthcare in Mexico proper. And powered in perpetuity by Mexican oil running as many power stations as necessary to light up a resort Strip hundreds of miles long.
The eastern side of the peninsula is turned into total pristine eco-preserve, the grandest natural park on the continent. Whale watching, biological research, no-impact camping/tourism, top to bottom. Between tree huggers and lounge lizards, it would clean up. Ultimate plan, besides metric craptons of money in profit, would be to teach Mexican nationals to run the place and maintain the infrastructure themselves, with scheduled turnover in a century when the lease expires.
At that point, they can decide if they want to spread that model to the rest of their country, or go back to uniparty socialism, endemic official corruption, and rule by cartels. In return, we deport every illegal here since ever back to Mexico, and they and we jointly patrol the border to prevent any further overflow. Every one that gets caught results in a reduction in Mexico's cut of revenues from Baja by the actual amount they cost the U.S.
Now Mexico has skin in the game, and a positive example for how to unscrew their problems.
And their douchebags end up breaking rocks, or dead, while the decent hard-working ones get full employment, and all the benefits of the fruits of their labor, without crooked government shakedowns or cartel chaos. And the better they do at it, the more skin they have in the game.
And the world gets the grandest playground ever seen.

20:1 the rest of Mexico, including 99% of illegals here, would be frothing at the mouth to stay in Mexico and earn decent money if they could do it without leaving their country. Done right, it could even provide a draw to suck a lot of the ones already here back out.

And it would be a lot better plan than another failed Punitive Expedition.
