A friend of Harvey's gets a weekly basket of food from the food bank.
Being too good to eat half of it because... They don't say it, but it's because a lot of the staples are (CENSORED) food.
So we get a weekly quarter basket of (CENSORED) food.
We then, promptly, don't eat any of it, but it's shelf stable and is great for the hurricane prep box.
We're cycling the stocks and I made the beans and rice today.
The flavor packet does nothing.
It's just beans and rice and completely vitamin enriched. Bland as fuck.
Although it's nutritionally complete, I'd hate to subsist on it for long as it comes.
Happily, I have a cabinet of spices to throw at it!
With some Scezchan sauce and soy it's quite good.
Not sure what the "Censored" portion is, but... Well, learned long ago that the hot sauces, spices and additives are REALLY necessary when presented with what we are assured is "food" (MREs or the like)...
ReplyDeleteIt's the N word. Most everything they reject is stereotyped as black people's food.
DeleteDouble idiots, if you ask me. I've never had a bad meal when I was invited to my black friend's houses. The stereotypical black food is almost invariably GOOD.
People who are poor tend to find creative ways to make the cheapest food tasty. Well, except the lazy ones who want it handed to them that way.

Bland beans and rice can be deblanded with spices as you say. Or canned meat and spices. Some ham and pepper.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite cheap meals is beans and rice, toss some ham in and onions. Sometimes garlic powder.
Back in the bad days me and mine also had to deal with food banks and stuff. It happens. Just gotta suck it up.
Spices, adding some flavor components and most anything that comes in a food box can be tolerated.
Bonus points, most still tastes better than Mountain House or any other 'long-term' freeze dried soy protein enhanced survival food.
