Tire Hop

Two of my tires are out of round.

I know this because the dynamic balancer at the shop that mounted my tires told me so.

My car is decidedly pedestrian compared to most of their customers.

The mostly deal in Corvettes and horsepower upgrades north of 500 horses.

Being out of round as much as my tires are at 200 miles an hour would be bad.

I can't even feel it at 100.  Turns out they're not out of round by very much, just enough for the machine to sense at the most sensitive setting.

On the drive to the casino for my father in law's birthday I noted that it was much smoother than with the steel rims.  Marv concurred.

Something that started as routine and ended up being amusing was the tire pressure light.

It's common for TPMS to panic about the tire pressure when you first start the car then calm down as it reads the sensors in turn after their absence.

For me the light started out as on and reading "TPMS Fault".  A couple miles later, that changes to four individual messages telling me each tire is low.

As they warmed up and the pressures rose, the fronts stopped complaining at 34 psi and one rear stopped at 38.

The shop is used to different cars and 32 psi is normal for a Vette or Camaro.

40 is what a Caprice PPV wants.  35 is fine, but I don't have the module edit to lower the threshholds and keep the light off.

  1. For my C6 when I switch between the two sets of rims I have, one with street tires and the other with Hoosier slicks I have to put the car into "training" mode and then use a TPMS tool at each valve stem to get the car to recognize the different TPMS monitors. Maybe it would figure it out on its own eventually but I usually don't have that much time.

    1. The Beast, if I swapped wheels for autocross, would need to be told which sensor is in what wheelwell with my handy TPMS tool. Put the car in learn mode, wave the tool at all four wheels in a specific order and listen for the horn to beep.

What the initial light here was the system going, "where'd you guys go?" to the sensors and then saying, "oh there you are!"

  2. I am pretty sure you need a Tech-2 scanner tool to change those settings, The regular scanner tools like you can buy at Auto Zone or Harbor Freight definitely won't do it, and I am not sure if even the high end ones from Snap-On or MAC can do some of the manufactuterer specific stuff. I know they couldn't do the magnetic ride shock delete on my C6 so I had to buy a Tech-2. It was hard to get one. I tried from a couple of Amazon sellers and neither one ever showed up. I was finally able to get one from an eBay seller in Hong Kong.

    1. Tech2 cannot program my modules. GDS2 is the system the dealer would use.

There's a company in Australia with software that will access what I need to change what I want changed.

$325 for the dongle, software and credits. The downside is needing a Win10 box.

I'd need a Win10 box for GDS2 as well, but GDS2 demands several hardware specs that aren't really needed, but won't install without them. They clearly have a dealer laptop in mind for the specifications.

    2. Interesting. The Tech2 works with most GM from 1999-2013. I forget what year your PPV is, but if it is 2014 or 2015 then that would explain why you need GDS2. If its a 2013 or older did they use a different ECM or something that makes it not work? I'm pretty sure that the Tech2 will work on Camaros up to 2013 which are a similar platform to the PPV. I know it works fine on my 2012 C6 and my 2005 Colorado. I haven't tried it but I am pretty sure the 2015 Silverado is a no-go except as a basic OBD-II scanner because if I remember right it doesn't recognize VINs newer than 2013.
