Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid being "remade".
While upwards of 30% of the cow-punching population of the old west was black, Robert LeRoy Parker wasn't.
Again, Hollywood, if you want to do something original, do something original.
Gender and race swapping with a retread of an old story is tedious enough.
Gender and race swapping of historical figures is quite enough.
But hey! Amazon, you're so original and avant garde showing that a black man can be a criminal... Oh wait.
Because that's what The Wild Bunch were, criminals.
I'd like to have a moratorium on "remakes" and "re-imaginings" in general. Do some original stories, and that way you can have all the characters "of color" you want. I love the original West Side Story and refused to watch the remake.
ReplyDeleteYep, typical lazy find and replace to destroy a beloved film. They could have made a film about Bass Reeves instead since the 2010 version has mixed reviews. Heck make an original character and do some actual creativity. How about black train robbers being chased by Bass Reeves?
ReplyDeleteEven back in the day before every remake had to be done to make some kind of political point most remakes stank. Doing casting just to right supposed historical wrongs in opportunity now just seems to result in remakes being even crappier than they otherwise would be. I agree that it is time for Hollywood to create some totally new content. New content that they could do anything they want with. But it seems like they are intentionally doing this for a reason. It's a big FU to movie goers.
ReplyDeleteRemakes mostly suck, though I’d love to see Starship Troopers remade by somebody who actually read it. Hey, and keep Johnny Rico Filipino and you can be diverse as all get out. My youngest daughter who is very much a comics world fan is always asking me why they keep replacing all the red haired women characters with black or brown actors. I tell her they just don’t like red hair.
