The comparison in picture form.
Val is 10.7 lb. and Brenda is just 8 lb. as shown not counting the sling.
I think either will suffice for the job, with Brenda being the handier choice because she's almost three pounds lighter.
Valentine, on the other hand groups a lot better at 100 yards with that 20" barrel.
The big question really is: Can you legally justify a shot at the distance where the differences in ballistics matter between the two?
Because the law will return after the disaster ends, and you WILL have to explain the corpses.
Though, I think a great deal of leniency was granted in the wake of the really bad hits in Florida. I wonder where I could go to check on that before it becomes a make-or-break legal problem.
I think I will go with the handier option unless the looters are systematically burning houses up and down the block.
If that becomes true...
Reach out, reach out and touch someone...
Godless .270 Win will suffice all the way down the street.
PS: Do you know the distances to the landmarks in your neighborhood?
Indoors, a pistol allows you to operate door knobs, light switches, flashlights. In the neighborhood, it will be tougher to claim self defense at rifle range. Defense of others? And an understanding court. Inside of 100 yards, iron sights are probably quicker. Out further, the glass would be helpful with identifying the action and the individual. Still, for a civilian, perceived threat is typically part of the law. The glass helps with that in a SHTF situation. Mostly, for a thump in the night, or screams across the street, it's bring what you got. Oh, show that you are a careful and caring individual, by calling 911 at some point. Even if there is no response, there is evidence that you tried.

I lean more on "when do I have to shoot" to stop death & grievous bodily harm or arson.
ReplyDeleteIt's more defendable than the more common "when can I shoot".
As to ballistic effectiveness, either should be good enough for unarmored targets. But the 20"
with good M193 could probably "vibe check" anyone with questionable plates.

ReplyDeleteif things ever get that bad for this debate, I don't think you will need to worry about the "law".... at least for awhile... panzer guy

ReplyDeleteWhat were these?
"Though, I think a great deal of leniency was granted in the wake of the really bad hits in Florida. I wonder where I could go to check on that before it becomes a make-or-break legal problem"
It's rumor and second hand stories I heard about Andrew and how few prosecutions were made on people defending their rubble.
DeleteMy Godless, BLR, 7mmMag. 5/8th. inch group at 200 yards hand loading experiments. Was intending for Caribou at long range. Shot my double shovel, at less than 20 yards. Go figure?
ReplyDeleteMy best group with Agnes is a clover-leaf at 100 yards. Ideal conditions, indoor range, bipod, taking all the time in the world between shots.
DeleteI have to keep optics in mind. Political Optics. The prosecutor waving a decked-out assault rifle in front of a jury is bad optics for "average joe citizen claiming self defense" in my neck of the woods.
ReplyDeletePROSECUTOR: "As you can see!" *waves gun in front of jury* "This person is a gun FANATIC with an ASSAULT RIFLE SPECIALLY OUTFITTED to KILL! HOLLOW POINTS! RED DOT OPTICS! A light mount so he could HUNT HIS PREY IN THE DARK! I ask you.. was this really self defense or was this person looking for a reason to kill?"
Best I stick with stock pistols, revolvers, or pappy's longun with the wood stocks. Florida is much different, tho. -JKing
