Test Fit

JT loaned me a wheel off his CTS to see if they cleared my Brembos.

No clearance issues that I can see!

Not a bad looking rim either.  Bonus: there are a lot of take-off rims available around here as well.

I want to stay on 18's if I can because going too low profile on the tires is uncomfortable and more susceptible to damage from potholes.

  1. Those are nice looking rims. Thanks to GM interchangable parts I think you can even swap out the center caps with ones with the Chevy logo on them. If they are the design they look like I think you can pop them out from the back side and them pop new ones in.

18s are a good choice in general right now as far as availability and price of tires goes. It's one of the most common sizes which means the majority of tires on the market are available. 15's through 17s are a PITA these days, limited availability especially in wide widths. 19s and 20s are readily available but usually the tires are more expensive due to size

What's the advantage of the CTS wheel, just cosmetics or is it a wider wheel? Lighter? I've found not all alloy wheels are created equal on that. In particular you have to watch out for some repro Corvette wheels from a company called "OEM Wheels". They LOOK the same but are noticeably heavier for some reason than original factory wheels. I don't know if it is the alloy they use or whether the casting is thicker or something.

    1. I like a couple styles of the CTS rim, and they're available for $400-$500 for a whole set because people have put 20" aftermarket rims on their Caddy.

    2. Do you mean OE Wheels in Sarasota? Several years ago I bought a set of reproduction Corvette Grand Sport wheels with Nitto NT05's already mounted from them. All four wheels with tires cost about what two real Grand Sport wheels would cost. I'm not going for autocross championships or anything so weight isn't really an issue. I just like the looks of those 11" wide rears. They were fun cruising the Tail Of The Dragon. My phone app said they were pulling a sustained 1G+ in the curves. - Marv

    3. Aesthetics is more than a good enough reason to change rims. I do think at those CTS rims look nicer than your stock ones. Are the stock ones alloy wheels or steelies with plastic wheel covers? I was googling it and I didn't get a really straight answer about what the PPVs came with for the "detective" model. The patrol car version looks like it mostly had black steelies with a small plastic cap.

Could be the same company. The wheels I've seen are indeed very affordable and look pretty much identical to the factory wheels. I do actively AutoX, although maybe not really in contention for championships, at least not nationally. I had a set of NT05s I ran for one season on my C4 in AutoX, but I was not happy with them, not nearly as grippy as I had hoped for. I bought a set of Toyo Proxes RR and those are great, albeit not street legal at all. I'm not sure 11" would work very well on my C4 unless I made some wheel well mods.

    4. All PPV came with 18x8 steelies. Some had the little center thing, others had the big plastic cover.

    5. 18x9.5 alloy wheels with some wider tires would probably be a nice upgrade as long as they'll fit in the wheelwells without rubbing. More tire good...

  2. Potholes? You live in freaking Florida bubba, you folks don't even know what potholes are. Michigan on the other hand, kings of pothole creation. I would love to go back to 14" or 15" wheels with taller tire side walls. As it is, my 16's are getting chewed up by the roads near Lansing (home of Gretchen Witless - so called "elected" governor) where sadly, my son and his family happen to reside.

    1. Every year you people (what did he mean by, "you people?") bring down potholes.

Damn Snowbirds corrupting our youth and stealing our wimmins.

    2. I don't miss the north and the cold and the salt and the potholes every spring... Thanks for reminding me part of the reason I moved. Yes, the months of 100+ degrees is worth it not to have 20 below and snow and every car over 3-5 years old having rust through...
