It's an interesting confluence that the F-35 is the Lightning II in both US and British service.
The first US Lightning is the P-38.
The first UK Lightning is the supersonic interceptor from English-Electric.
Amusingly both are twin engine aircraft where the Lightning II is a single engine bird.
