In a thread about SIG-Sauer deciding to discontinue pistols in .40 S&W this little gem was seen:
".40 cal was made for cop-wannabees who could never in their wildest dreams make the cut."
That's got to be the most brutal, yet subtle, slam of the FBI I've ever seen.
that is an odd quote to me because from what i have seen, .40 cal is used by many cops, and then how many different agencies have dabbled in different calibers over the years? I suppose i am curious to better understand this viewpoint? I am also surprised Sig would discontinue this caliber... seems like a decent caliber to me?
ReplyDeleteI think he's talking about commercial sales for the "wannabees", not department issue.
DeleteIt seemed, for a while, every department followed the FBI's lead and adopted .40S&W. Then in the past few years, everyone has jumped back to 9mm.
Lots of improvements have been made to 9mm that make its actual performance in tissue roughly equal to .40. Since you get more shots with 9mm and an easier to shoot gun, it's a no-brainer to make the change.
That doesn't mean that .40 doesn't work, it just means 9mm got better.
I'm pretty sure that SIG is hoisted on their own petard here. With lots of departments they offered SIG handguns for free in exchange for whatever the department already issued. Those guns went to the secondary market, like AIM Surplus. With all the cheap, used but well maintained, .40's out there, how can you manage to sell a new one?
I've got a .40 and it's ok. Just ok. I was there, the gun was there, the money was right... But it wasn't my first choice.
ReplyDeleteGiven my druthers, I'd have a 1911. But the best gun is the one in your hand when you need a gun.
As far as the fibbies? Corrupt, treasonous pussies...
Not at all a cop fan, but at least responding to public emergencies is more than the feds do.
