Another Convert

Changed the Mother in Law's Lenovo T420 from Win7 to Ubuntu 22 today.

Harvey checked to make sure all her Facebook games still worked and we got her bookmarks restored.

Should be all-good now!

It's astonishing how much faster the machine runs on Linux than Windows.

Fingers crossed she's happy with the change, there will be something of a learning curve because things are different shaped and in different places.

  1. I am running Zorin as a print and media server on an old Win7 Gateway laptop. Zorin is an Ubuntu derivative that does not require a lot of resources to run. The laptop is much faster. I also put in a solid state hard drive. I have been thinking about duel booting my Win10 with Zorin.

  2. Win 7 will likely quit working on the Internet soon. Old versons of MacOS already have because newer browsers won't run, and older browsers won't work with the encruption required for SSL on many web sites. Newer Windows versions often won't work, or will be unusably slow on hardware old enough to have been shipped with pre Windows 8. And sometimes Windows upgrades just plan go awry... License issues, etc... Ubuntu to the rescue... It's not perfect, but it's free and it works pretty well, even on way out of date hardware.
