Technomad, in the comments mentioned .308 NATO.

While I know what he meant, it's yet another gun terminology thing that makes me twitch.

There's no such thing as .308 NATO.

.308 Winchester exists.

7.62x51mm NATO exists.

7.62 Winchester doesn't exist.

7.62x51mm NATO and .308 Win are basically the same thing.

Yes they are.

So saying .308 NATO isn't unclear at all.

It just makes me twitch.

  1. Well, that's how a lot of the ammunition I bought was labeled.

  2. This reminds me of the myriad names for 9x19mm pistol rounds, Parabellum, Luger, NATO etc. Fortunately I have never been in the meme situation of someone demanding "Glock bullets", since I would produce a box of .45 GAP and record the subsequent meltdown

    1. Willard and I have been a store when a customer wanted "ammo for their Glock."

"What caliber Glock?" they innocently asked.

It went back and forth a little bit until he called his wife to take a picture of the gun where it said .40 S&W.

      New shooters. Gotta love 'em.
