I like Bulleit. It's a bit more expensive than I usually go but is occasionally splurge worthy. I like it's vanilla notes. For the money I like McAfee's Benchmark #8 from Buffalo Trace. It's the same mash bill and comes off the same still as their main brand but it is only aged "at least 36 months" instead of 6-8 years and bottled at 80 proof instead of 90. Can I tell the difference... yes, but it isn't the 3x difference that the price is. And in my opinion Benchmark beats a lot of other Bourbons that are more expensive like Beam white label or even Evan Williams black label (and definitely Evan Willians green label). Albeit I haven't found a "Straight Bourbon" yet that wasn't drinkable... Blended... that's another story... unlike Scotch where there are a lot of good blends (Dewar's, J&B, Cutty Sark, Johnnie Walker, Famous Grouse, etc), almost all of the "Blended Bourbons" are blends not of different Bourbons but Bourbon with "neutral grain spirits" a.k.a. unflavored vodka. So avoid the "Kentucky Deluxe" if you value your taste buds!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, whatever your choice of Bourbon is, happy belated B-Day to the Army.
