I'm thinking player character myself.

Image search doesn't really help find the history of the photo, but all of the hits are to Canadian history sites.

From the holster, it's post 1875, so it's not impossible for someone in Canada to have acquired a katana.

Some museum has a caption for this, and I'd love to read it.

  2. Have seen pictures like this one before. There displayed for the photographer is all the wealth he possesses, same for what his wife is wearing. Sword, gun, horse and home along with best clothes (likely only set he has). Photos of cowboys and of vaqueros and gauchos in the 1800's all have this same kind of pose with silver and gold adornments, showing off their wealth, knives, swords and or guns.
