I Set My Mind In Motion

Remember when I set myself to liking my M16A4 clone?

I'm there.

She's heavy, but it's a nice mass.

5.56 didn't have a lot of recoil to begin with and 10.7 lb. (loaded, with optic and light) sure sucks a lot of it up.

I like the Primary Arms 5x scope and it makes small groups easy.

She points readily and is comfortable to shoot quickly, what's not to love?

If you have the means, I highly recommend you make your own.

  1. TL/DR: I now have the new Vortex version of the 5x prism scope on one of my ARs, and I like it. A heavier rifle isn’t a bad thing.

On my AR carbine with a heavy barrel, I recently put on one of the new Vortex Spitfire HD II 5x prism optics. Say that five times fast... Previously it had a Sig Romeo 4H that I saw two different reticles with, and a Sig 6x flip over magnifier. Not knowing which reticle to use was a bit disconcerting.

I was able to do a 50 yard zero on it so far, and 4 out of the 5 final rounds were within one inch, and the flier made the group about an inch and three quarters.

With my ability, and an improvised rest on an improvised range, I'd call that pretty good.

I'm liking the prism optic, and I don't think the 5x is going to be a handicap. Other than the shorter eye relief, but that's why the buttstock is adjustable.

As for weight, I swapped the older, heavier, non-m-lok aluminum handguard for a Aero Precision one that I can put m-lok stuff onto, and after the swaps (handguard & optic) I saved 1 lb 4 oz. It's still 6 lbs 14 oz which is lighter than the AR carbine I was using for 3 gun matches (pencil barrel, Trijicon Accupoint LPVO, is 7 lbs 0.1 oz). No lights, lasers, bipods, or slings. I do have a small finger stop thingy from the dudes at 9 Hole Reviews, though.

.223/5.56 is still a light recoiling round in my book (grew up on .30 caliber rifles) so the main consideration for the weight is how long am I going to have to schlep it around. I'm not going to be in the infantry with it, not even mechanized, so even a relatively heavy rifle like your Valentine really wouldn’t be a burden, in my opinion.

  2. Closest thing I have has an HBAR, so it isn't exactly an M16A2 clone. It is even a little heavier due to that probably. But it still feels good.

    1. The HBAR profile barrel is almost exactly a pound heavier than a gov't profile A2 tube.

That'd put it at 9.4 lb. loaded with USGI thirty rounder if it was otherwise in an M16A2 configuration.

Valentine with the A2 barrel profile, RAS and PMAG (0.1 heavier than USGI) comes to 9. Plus Primary Arms 5x (1.1 lb) Surfire M951 (0.6 lb.) and sling (0.3 lb.) for an all up weight of 11 lb.

FuzzyGeff's HBAR with YHM free-float and USGI comes to 9.2. Plus 3-9x40 scope (1.3 lb.) and Harris bipod (0.7 lb.) and sling (0.3 lb.) for a total of 11.5 lb.
